The Ruhr Museum is a regional museum of the Ruhr Area, housed in the former Coal Washing Plant at the Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex in Essen.
Its permanent exhibition traces the region’s story from the formation of coal to the changes shaping the Ruhr today. For a city-centre base, City Hotel Essen offers three-star rooms in Essen city centre.
- Location: Gelsenkirchener Straße 181, 45309 Essen, inside Zollverein.
- Permanent exhibition: Open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
- Visit length: Allow 2–3 hours for the museum.
- Adult ticket: €10 for the permanent exhibition, or €15 for the complete ticket.
What does the Ruhr Museum cover?

The Ruhr Museum covers the natural and cultural history of the Ruhr region, from coal’s formation more than 300 million years ago to the area’s present-day structural change.
The permanent exhibition stretches across three levels and includes 6,000 exhibits. The museum is a dependent foundation within the Zollverein Foundation; it has held that status since 1 January 2008.
Where is the museum within Zollverein?

The Ruhr Museum occupies the former Coal Washing Plant at Shaft XII, within the Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex.
Zollverein is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and its grounds are open to the public at all times. The wider site includes the former Shaft Facilities XII, 1/2/8 and the Zollverein Coking Plant, so you can pair a museum visit with time outdoors among the complex’s industrial buildings.
What are the Ruhr Museum’s tickets and opening hours?

The permanent exhibition is open every day from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. It closes on 24 December, 25 December and 31 December. The museum recommends checking the official site before you go for current hours and ticket details.

How do you get to Zollverein from central Essen?

From Essen central station, take tram 107 toward Gelsenkirchen/Hanielstraße/Katernberg to the Zollverein stop, then walk about 5 minutes to the museum. For more on connections around the city, read how to use Essen public transport.
Other public-transport stops also serve the site. Tram 107 stops at Zollverein, about a 4-minute walk from the museum; bus 183 serves Kohlenwäsche, about a 2-minute walk away.
From Zollverein Nord, bus 170 or regional train RB 32 leaves you about a 10-minute walk from the museum. The site-wide visitor information also lists suburban train line 2 at Zollverein Nord.
If you’re driving, the museum gives Fritz-Schupp-Allee as the car access route and recommends lots A1 and A2. Parking there is free, about a 2-minute walk from the museum.
How much time should you plan at the museum and site?
Set aside 2–3 hours for the museum, as it recommends, then allow additional time if you want to walk around Zollverein’s grounds. The complex is open to the public at all times, making the outdoor industrial setting an easy addition before or after your exhibition visit.
If you’re fitting the museum into a wider city visit, how to plan one day in Essen can help you place Zollverein alongside time in the city centre.
What else can you see at Zollverein?
The Red Dot Design Museum is another museum at Zollverein. It opens daily from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and closes on 24 December, 25 December, 31 December and 1 January. Its hours overlap with the Ruhr Museum’s, so you can plan both for the same day while checking current details before setting out.
